Muwekma Park

Sunnyvale, CA

Muwekma Park is a 6.5-acre public park located in the heart of Silicon Valley. EPTDESIGN led the design process for the park which included a Public/Private partnership between the City of Sunnyvale and The Irvine Company. Through several community workshops, we arrived on the final program for the park which includes a large, inclusive playground, walking trails, and passive picnic areas — all anchored by a grove of over 50 existing redwood and ash trees.

The final design includes an inclusive playground with a large “tree house” inspired play structure that weaves around several existing redwoods and provides wheelchair access throughout. We worked closely with the City and our playground consultant to design spaces throughout the entire park that provides unique sensory, physical, or mental engagement for all ages and abilities.

Over 50 existing redwood trees were protected in place — creating a native grove with shade and fallen leaf ground cover areas for children to play. Nearly a dozen additional redwoods were also relocated from elsewhere on the site into the park and placed strategically within the new design.

The landscape for the park features an 1/8-mile jogging trail around a large flex field, a 1/2-acre dog park, inclusive playground, picnic areas, and open play area for pick-up soccer and frisbee games.
