TREK 2016: Philadelphia – Pop-up Culture

Over the past several years Philadelphia has been an epicenter of pop-up culture. The urban environment of barren parking lots, under-used park space and static public squares have seen a rejuvenation with the help of temporary interventions. Philadelphia’s blighted landscapes blossom into a vibrant city full of pop-up parks, beaches, floating docks, restaurants, beer gardens, concerts and movie nights with spaces that engage with the surrounding community. Public entities, non-profit organizations and private entrepreneurs have found that the value of using temporary landscape as a method to experiment with programming, design, materials and construction and they are looking to landscape architects to take the lead.

Goal: To study the methods of experimentation and reclamation used in pop-up installations. To equip EPTDESIGN with the knowledge of how temporary solutions may be applied to design challenges posed by our clients.
