Over the past century, Berlin’s landscape has endured enormous physical and cultural changes due to war, a division of power and an ensuing cultural uprising. But over the past few decades, the city has embraced a policy of adaptive reuse, creating public spaces and parks in many of the abandoned military or industrial landscapes that scatter throughout the city.
This brings us to today, where the story of adaptive reuse is transforming the landscape of Berlin and softening those harsh edges of the past. Whether it’s an old railway station, an abandoned airport, or even the Wall itself, Berlin’s approach is ground-breaking and inspiring.
Goals: My goal will be to visit and study landscape architectural projects in the greater Berlin area for the purpose of seeking out innovative and creative adaptive reuse methods.
