El Molino Estate

Pasadena, CA

Nestled within a secluded setting, this historic Mediterranean villa, designed by architect Luis DuPuget Millar and completed in 1917, served as the inspiration for a complete garden renovation tailored for an active family. The transformation balances spaces for large gatherings and quiet moments, seamlessly enhancing the family’s lifestyle.

Drawing inspiration from the villa’s original architectural details, the stately entry procession showcases a circular limestone motor court and bespoke Italian fountain, creating a welcoming approach to the front door.

Designed with entertaining in mind, the expansive pool and spa form a gracious outdoor living area in a previously under-utilized part of the property. Fountains add delight and animate this important garden room.

Garden details echo the architecture, unifying the home and grounds into one cohesive composition. Throughout the expansive grounds, a painterly palette of plants reflects both the interior design and the owners’ love for vibrant color. Taken as a whole, the gardens add new vibrancy and renewed elegance to this storied estate.
