Oak Knoll

Pasadena, CA

How do you make a 1920s formal Italianate house suit its family’s exuberant sensibilities? We started with a radical shift in site circulation on the double-sized corner lot to bring people in from the front and side, a move that opened up amazing new possibilities in a backyard previously given over to driveway and circulation.

The new landscape marries a classical garden structure with eclectic plantings, colorful materials, and playful details.

New terraces, loggia, a pool, and pool pavilion provide important outdoor living space for this active family.

The gardens provide warmth and a sense of enclosure with broad views out to the mountains beyond.
