The University of Redlands is an independent, private university committed to innovation, learning, and individualized education. Lewis Hall, which is part of the Stauffer Science Complex, uses innovative systems and architecture to reduce resource use while providing a high-tech environment for learning. The landscape, as an integral part of the architectural system, captures storm water runoff, provides shade, conserves water, reduces the heat island affect, and provides opportunities for habitat with native plants. Reclaimed concrete was used to build seatwalls and as part of the paving. Local materials minimized the cost and environmental impact of transportation. This project earned a LEED Silver Certification and won a Merit Award from the Southern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
