Watts Serenity Park

Los Angeles, CA

Drawing inspiration from the community’s history and the site’s unique location along a rail line, a railroad theme rolls through the design of the park’s playgrounds, gathering spaces, and picnic shelters. Custom features such as the themed shade structures refer to vernacular train depots while a trestle bridge becomes a highlight—and high point—of the artfully sculpted site.

Shade trees, boulders, and drought-tolerant gardens throughout are combined with the work of local artists, instilling a sense of pride and awareness of the community’s cultural roots.

A rolling lawn, skate park, jogging path, and fitness zones provide valuable recreational opportunities for this neighborhood that was in great need of additional open space.
