The central core of Pepperdine University’s Malibu campus is a connector between academic buildings, outdoor plazas, and levels of the hillside school. The renovation of Elkins Auditorium provided the opportunity to unify the designs of several plazas, while easing the transitions between levels and uses. Warm paving colors accented with local Malibu tile draws from the native rock of the Santa Monica Mountains beyond. California-appropriate plants such as Sycamores, Bougainvillea, Agaves, and Kangeroo Paw give splashes of color with little need for irrigation or maintenance. The landscape design unifies the campus while creating comfortable and inviting living places for students, faculty, and visitors.
